Cape Town SOUTH AFRICA

Depot Location: CAPE TOWN, South Africa
Timings TBC from 2027
In the meantime, Duncan from African Overlanders will be able to help you out to / from Cape Town.
For beginner route planning purpose, very broadly you can split Africa into four geopolitical regions:
1) Southern Africa,
2) Eastern route to Rift Valley - Djibouti;
3) Western Route to/from Morocco; and
4) The big red bit
- The western route from Morocco to Namibia requires planning so you don't get snookered. If you will ride from Europe then these days you'll be on the western run.
- To go the eastern run you'll need a Red Sea shipment around Sudan, which has gone to poo.
- The western run can be a bitofa visa puzzle although things have apparently improved a lot since we rode it 2016. At that time we were able to bowl visas in Rabat to get us through to Cameroon (except for Nigeria which we got easily in Bamako). If you ride S->N then Pretoria excellent for visas.
- The main obstacle on the western run is the Congo River. Do not cross between Brazzaville and Kinshasa without insider contacts or you will get jarded. The remote crossing to/from Luozi DRC Ferry is well worth considering (we crossed there no issues).
- Riding N->S then Namibia will feel like the land of milk and honey. Good tyre options Windhoek.
- Depending how squiggly your route is, you'll need 15k km tyres to make it Morocco to Namibia or have a tyre plan enroute. You used to be able to put 3 month advance order in with Toni-Togo but beware, apparently Toni isn't there anymore.
- We carried tyres a bitofa way, which was dumb. Don't be a tightass carrying tyres - just have a plan for your next tyres.

If you will ride the eastern route then entry via South Africa is the go. Southern Africa and the Eastern route have well trodden tourist trails with all the amenities. You will find shipping exit options from Dar es Salaam, Mombasa and even Djibouti to a lesser extent … or even better (if you have the time), plan for a loop back to South Africa.
If we get the interest we will provide a later shipment to and from Milan, which will provide entry / exit for trans-Africa riders on the western run. Bikes would be ready late August Milan. Early September is great for the Alps, October November is magic in Morocco … and November also a good time to launch on the western run. The return shipment to Australia from Milan would be early December. This shipment would also provide a Sep Oct Nov ride window for those interested in Europe Autumn + Morocco.
